A few years ago a friend of mine was preparing a radio broadcast about space medicine. She asked me to make a short sound impression about  the history of the space race. She gave me only 2 minutes in his program.  I’ve taken the challenge, chosen something from radio sound archives and mixed it with music. Of course I could take music of Jean Michel Jarre or Vangelis, but I’ve decided to take … U2.

Here’s the result:  

Description for English users: first you can hear historical broadcast from Polish Radio announcing that Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth. Then first (and so far the only one) Polish cosmonaut Mirosław Hermaszewski is announcing that he’s ready for his flight. And finally you can hear radio reporter covering the launch of Soyuz with Hermaszewski on board. Finally Mr. Hermaszewski is describing his feelings 20 years later, and by end of the file there is voice of Yuri Gagarin.

 Jakiś czas temu moja radiowa koleżanka przygotowywała audycję o medycynie kosmicznej. Poprosiła mnie o nagranie krótkiej impresji dźwiękowej związanej z historią podboju kosmosu dając mi na to jedynie 2 minuty w swoim programie. Podjąłem się zadania, wybrałem coś z archiwum i zmiksowałem z muzyką. Mogłem wybrać coś Jarre’a albo Vangelisa, ale w końcu zdecydowałem się na U2..

Have you ever wondered what is the biggest difference between Russian and US space programs? Why Russians are sending dozens of rockets to space every year and NASA is still working on reanimation of the shuttle ?  In my opinion it is the matter of an approach. These sound files can explain everything.

Now everything is clear. For Americans every launch is special. For Russians it’s just another mission. No joy, no emotions. Normal duty. Would I choose Soyuz TM for my first space trip ? Eh, I don’t know.
