The moon watch / Księżycowy zegarek
According to official NASA information the Omega Speedmaster was the first and so far the only watch worn on the Moon. But surprisingly it was not worn by the first man who stepped on the lunar surface ! Both astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neal Armstrong were equipped with identical wrist watches but Armstrong’s Speedmaster malfunctioned during descent and he decided to leave it inside the spacecraft during EVA. Aldrin is the second man on the moon and after 100 or 200 years his name would be probably forgotten, but his watch has a good chance to became an important part of history (the history of wristwatches of course). The history of Speedmaster in space is quite interesting. According to Imai’s Time Capsule it began in 1961 when NASA’s flight equipment buyer went to Corrigan’s watch shop in Texas to purchase a chronograph. At that time, the NASA flight equipment buyer purchased five chronographs, all of different brands, including the Omega Speedmaster. The intended use for the chronographs was not made clear. What brought the NASA equipment buyer to a jeweler’s on a Texas street comer was most likely none other than President Kennedy’s speech. NASA procured a large number of Speedmaster’s during the 1960’s for use as an Space Flight Crew chronograph after extensive testing prior to the first Gemini flight. So, when You look at the famous Omega ad, you are not looking at Neal Armstrong, but Buzz Aldrin. Today most of American or Russian astronauts are using classic Speedmaster or a new X-33 model.

Według informacji z NASA Omega Speedmaster to pierwszy i do tej pory jedyny zegarek który był noszony przez astronautów na Srebrnym Globie. Ale jak się okazuje nie przez pierwszego człowieka który postawił stopę na Księżycu ! Buzz Aldrin i Neil Armstrong zostali wyposażeni w identyczne zegarki, ale Omega Armstronga zepsuła się tuż przed lądowaniem i astronauta musiał zostawić ją w LEM-ie. A zatem Buzz Aldrin – drugi człowiek na Księżycu o którym za 100 czy 200 lat mało kto będzie pamiętał nosił na ręku zegarek który z pewnością przejdzie go historii (naręcznych chronometrów oczywiście). Historia kosmicznej kariery Speedmastera jest dość interesująca. Według Imail’s Time Capsule zaczęła się ona w 1961 roku, kiedy jeden z pracowników NASA wszedł do niewielkiego sklepu w Teksasie by kupić zegarek. Jak się później okazało – nie dla siebie. W tym czasie NASA testowała zegarki kilku innych firm nie informując producentów w jakim celu to robi. Po testach na pokładzie Gemini 3 w 1965 roku Speedmaster stał się oficjalnym zegarkiem amerykańskich astronautów. A zatem kiedy patrzycie na słynną reklamę Omegi Speedmaster (zwróćcie uwagę na prawy nadgarstek) widzicie nie Neila Armstronga, lecz Buzza Aldrina. Dziś większość Amerykańskich i Rosyjskich astronautów używa klasycznych speemasterów lub nowszego modelu X-33.
